History
The London Coliseum Theatre is one of London's largest and
best equipped theatres and was opened in 1904. Built by Frank
Matcham, a famous theatrical architect who also designed the
London Palladium.
In 1968 the Sadler's Wells Opera Company moved
into the theatre, then in 1974 the English National Opera
bought the freehold of the building for £12.8m. The
theatre underwent extensive renovations between 2000 and 2004
and has the widest proscenium arch in London as well as being
one of the earliest to have electric lighting. The
theatre now has 40% more public space and a new air-cooling
and ventilation system.
